Starting Fall 2027, students who select this major on their UC Berkeley application are automatically declared and do not need to take any other action to join the major. Details on the language requirements may be found here.
Any remaining declaration requirement courses that are not completed prior to transfer must be completed to graduate. Please refer to New Policies for Transfer Student Applicants here for more information on Direct Admission.
If you are directly admitted to the Comparative Literature but do not have all major preparation courses completed prior to matriculation, plan to take those remaining courses [minimum one lower division English, Rhetoric, or Comp Lit course] during your first semester on the Berkeley campus. Once admitted and prior to course selection, please contact Nina Rennert Cohen, Undergraduate Major Advisor (complituga@berkeley.edu) to create a program plan.
The Transfer Alliance Project (TAP) through the Center for Educational Partnerships is a great resource for 3rd year transfer students. Included is a suggested program plan for 3rd year transfer students, assuming that the student has all of the language prerequisites already in place, while it may be possible for such 3rd year transfer students to continue with their language studies upon arriving at Berkeley.
