Minor Requirements

Students in the College of Letters and Science may complete one or more minors of their choice, normally in a field both academically and administratively distinct from their major. To complete a minor in Comparative Literature, you will need to take 20 UPPER DIVISON UNITS that fall under the following requirements: 

Comparative Literature Coursework

  • CL100(A-D) (or HUM100) - intro course

  • CL151-171 - historical period course*

  • CL190 - senior seminar

*Summer CL156AC does NOT fulfill this requirement

Secondary Literature (non-primary language)

Non-required options/opportunities

  • 98BC/198BC - Berkeley Connect 1 unit course to learn more about studying comparative literature at UCB

  • Study Abroad: UCEAP opportunities around the globe

    • coursework in literature/literary arts*

    • study in language immersion (reading and writing in primary or secondary language)

    • final approval of coursework towards major (save all documentation including syllabi, reading lists, + assignments)

    • max. 4 courses from UCEAP can count towards major + must be taken for a letter grade

  • Participate in helping organize the Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium.

*literary arts includes music and film and is approved at the discretion of Comparative Literature faculty

To declare the minor: Contact our Undergraduate Advisor, Nina Rennert Cohen, at complituga@berkeley.edu. You must declare your minor prior to the first day of classes of your Expected Graduation Term (EGT). If your EGT is a Summer term, the deadline to declare a minor is anytime prior to the first day of classes for Summer Session A. 

In your final semester, complete the College of Letters & Science Minor Completion form and return it to complituga@berkeley.eduThis petition is necessary for the official notation of the Comparative Literature Minor to appear on students’ transcripts. This petition must be completed and submitted by Friday of RRR week of a student’s Expected Graduation Term.  Students are responsible for the timely completion and submission of these forms. All petitions are reviewed and approved by the Undergraduate Advisor in Comparative Literature.
