James T. Monroe, Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature, was honored on Friday September 21st by his former students Michelle Hamilton PhD 2001 (now Director of Medieval Studies and Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Minnesota) and David Wacks, PhD 2003 (now Professor of Spanish and Romance Languages at the University of Oregon).  Congratulations Professor Monroe!

Left to Right:  Professors Robert Kaufman, Michelle Hamilton, David Wacks, and James Monroe.

Professors Hamilton and Wacks have recently coedited “The Study of al-Andalus:  The Scholarship and Legacy of James T. Monroe” (cover shown).   An interesting side etymological side note from Professor Monroe, who states that “al-Andalus”, “Andalusia”, and “Vandal” all share a similar root from the original Latin.
