Comparative Literature alum Michael Allan (PhD 2008) has received the 2017 Modern Language Association Prize for the First Book Award for “In the Shadow of World Literature: Sites of Reading in Colonial Egypt.” Michael is an Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Oregon. In awarding the prize, the committee citation stated:“Allan’s examination of the putative opposition between the reading practices and sensibilities applied to the Qu’ran and those derived from the West could hardly be more urgent.”
